Academic integrity means applying honesty to your university work and avoiding plagiarism. It also means refraining yourself from cheating and giving credit to other people’s work and ideas.
Plagiarism is the manner of using someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own. Different universities have different plagiarism policies for their students as a way to encounter academic dishonest.
In UiTM, it counts as plagiarism if the similarity of your work to others is a whopping of 30% and above for your assignments or references.
Types of plagiarism:
- Direct Plagiarism
- Accidental Plagiarism
- Paraphrasing Plagiarism
- Complete Plagiarism
Plagiarism to avoid the most for students:
- Taking a manuscript or study of someone else’s work and submitting it under self-name instead of the original creator.
- Copying the text of another author word for word, without using question marks or attribution and later passing it as his or her own.
2 Ways to Avoid Plagiarism:
- Citation – Adding a citation in your writing and stating the full name of the source, the date it was published.
- Present your own ideas – Using your own choice of words based on the notes you’ve taken down in your lectures or classes.
Other than avoiding plagiarism to maintain your academic integrity, you should also be maintaining your GPA. GPA, or Grade Point Average is a number that shows how well you score in your course. In university, you no longer use grades to assess, but rather now use GPA and you can calculate it yourself if you have the following information – Credits attempted, final grades earned and point values for those grades, using this formula:

A table for the status and descriptions for those who failed in their course:

Activity 8: Calculate GPA
1. Calculate the GPA for Amelia Ameer for her first semester:

2. Calculate what would have happened if Amelia had earned a B in Chemistry.

3. What is the difference in GPA?
3.06 – 2.75 = 0.31
4. Now calculate Amelia GPA for the next semester:

5. What would happen if Amelia had received a D in Cell Bio instead of the B+?

6. What is the difference in GPA?
2.80 – 2.28 = 0.52
7. What is the difference in CGPA?
= (46.68 + 50.33) ÷ (17 + 18)
=2.77
