MODULE 1: GETTING READY TO LEARN

Transitioning from school life to university can be pretty difficult for some students if they don’t know how to adapt it properly. There are many different aspects of school and university such as:

  • You are expected to act like an adult since the atmosphere of the university is more different, there will be no more teachers or parents controlling of your time, thus you get to take greater control of how you spend your time and what you study. Responsibility is now 100% on you and no one is going to do it for you.
  • Time management is definitely a huge factor most students don’t pay attention to when transitioning from school life to university. The class hours of school is easier since you have a fixed timetable provided by the school/teachers. Meanwhile, at university, you will have to arrange your timetable in accordance with your chosen subjects.
  • The assignment types received in high school are composed of straightforward assessment but in university, types of assessments span and are designed to encourage analytical thinking and independent learning.
  • Class sizes in school are rather small and afford you more personal time with your teachers if you have any questions meanwhile in university, classes or lectures can be quite large so you may have to ask your lecturer regarding any questions outside of class.
  • In school, teachers check your completed homework and remind you of the reading you have to do while also providing you important information but in university, as helpful and open the lecturers are, they do not check the required reading or remind you to complete your homework. As said, you are now responsible to be at the top of your uni work.

In the venture of getting ready to learn, you also need to know your learning styles which consists of:

  1. Audio ( listening and speaking as a main way of learning.)
  2. Visual (  a learner utilizes graphs, charts, maps and diagrams )
  3. Kinesthetic ( require movement to learn )

Activity 1: Identify your learning style

Based on a quiz I did through a website that my lecturer gave, the scores that I achieved was:

  • Auditory: 40%
  • Visual: 30%
  • Tactile: 30%

This concludes that I am an audio learner! Rather than changing my learning style, the website states that I have to :

  • Sit where you can hear.
  • Have your hearing checked on a regular basis.
  • Use flashcards to learn new words; read them out loud.
  • Read stories, assignments, or directions out loud.
  • Record yourself spelling words and then listen to the recording.
  • Have test questions read to you out loud.
  • Study new material by reading it out loud.

8 steps to college success:

  • Be receptive to change
  • Stay up to date with your work
  • Form a study group
  • Get to know your lecturer
  • Participate in class
  • Become an active learner
  • Attend all classes
  • Work hard this semester
